Abstract

A new sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of trifluoperazine hydrochloride (TFPH) is developed. The method is based on an oxidative coupling reaction with 4- amino benzoic acid using potassium iodate as oxidizing agent in acidic midium to produce a violet color, soluble in water, stable product absorbs at 550 nm. Beer's law is in the linear range 10 - 80 μg/ml of TFPH. The molar absorptivity, Sandellʼs and detection limit (LOD) are 0.8032×104 liter. mol-1.cm-1, 0.0598 μg/cm2, 0.3882 μg/ml respectively. The RSD value is 0.177 – 0.295 %. This method is applied successfully for the determination of trifluoperazine hydrochloride in pharmaceutical formulations (tablets of salabid) and injection
